Sotheby's S|2 Exhibition of Rare Photographs from the Estate of Kati Horna

Sotheby auction

NEW YORK, 31 March 2017 – Sotheby’s S|2 is pleased to present Fantastic Rediscovered: Rare Photographs from the Estate of Kati Horna. Curated by Michael Otayek, the selling exhibition captures the Hungarian-born photographer’s exposure to an array of global movements and environments that helped shape her sophisticated, and occasionally humorous, point of view.

rained in Budapest under renowned Hungarian master József Pécsi, Horna, born Katalin Deutsch Blau, developed a keen artistic sensibility towards the fantastic and mysterious elements in everyday life. Though she lived and worked in various cities throughout her career, including Budapest, Berlin, and Barcelona, it was her time spent in Mexico City following the Spanish Civil War in 1939 that would influence the majority of Horna’s work. From New Vision photography in Central Europe, war photojournalism in Spain, to the late surrealist scene in Mexico City, Horna embraced photography as a means of subsistence, political engagement and creative expression throughout her, at times, tumultuous life.

On public exhibition now through 27 April, Fantastic Rediscovered unites a carefully assembled selection of series and portraits, many of which are making their public debut, preserved by Horna’s estate, and follows the artist’s first dedicated exhibition at Americas Society in New York last fall.
