Exhibition Opening / Gallery Event | Alexander Kluge In Conversation With Georg Baselitz And Anselm Kiefer

German artist Alexander Kluge has specially conceived for this exhibition a multi-screen video installation featuring a selection of his characteristic montage films, which will be projected along with some of his related writings. The installation will be exhibited in dialogue with 24 recent watercolours by Georg Baselitz and two new paintings by Anselm Kiefer, two artists with whom he has shared a longstanding intellectual kinship.

For the last fifty years Alexander Kluge (b. 1932, in Halberstadt) has been one of leading figures of the intellectual and cultural life in Germany. With a multidisciplinary approach, he juxtaposes images, music and text in different layers to encourage the free play of associations, revealing underlying patterns in the arts, philosophy and culture. This exhibition is organised concurrently with a series of talks and screenings by Alexander Kluge at the Grand Palais, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of man's first steps on the moon.

An exclusive conversation with Alexander Kluge will take place at 3pm on the opening day.

A series of preparatory drawings created by Georg Baselitz for the set design of Richard Wagner’s opera Parsifal, which premiered in June 2018 at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, will be on view.

Alongside Baselitz’s works on paper, two paintings by Anselm Kiefer will be on display. These new works are inspired by Des Meeres und der Liebe Wellen [Waves of love and the sea], a tragedy by nineteenth century Austrian playwriter Franz Grillparzer on the ancient love story of Hero, priestess of Aphrodite, and Leander.
