  • ROMAN MARBLE SHIELD PORTRAIT OF A PHILOSOPHER This fine image of a mature male with full hair and worn features belongs to a type called Shield Portrait, for the circular backdrop once framing the piece. This dignified halo-like frame was reserved for portraits of illustrious citizens and classical philosophers on public buildings and philosophical schools. Antonine or Severan, ca. AD 140-200 H: 63 cm. Avraham Ahdout Collection, Israel, acquired in 1982

  • Egyptian large grayish-green greywacke Osiris, mummiform, wearing the Atef-crown, and holding the crook and flail. XXVIth Dynasty, 664-525 BC H. 18 1/2 in. (47cm.)  Ex collection of Pierre Vérité, Paris, who began collecting in the 1920s; collection of his son Claude. Greywacke is a type of chloritic schist characterized by its hardness, dark color, and angular grains of quartz and feldspar set in a compact, fine matrix.

  • Black- figure hydria by the Ready Painter. The main scene shows a man arming, his left leg lifted as he pulls on his greave. Facing him is a woman supporting his spear. The two main figures are flanked by four other men three of whom carry spears and two of whom are wrapped in the himation. The shoulder zone shows a panther facing right between two grazing deer. At the top a band of tongues and at the lower body a band of rays. Athens, 520 - 510 BC. 12.1 ( 307 mm). Intact.

  • Torso of Meleager. H: 52 cm. The hero stands dressed in a chlamys. The transitions are soft, the hip slightly accentuated. Copy of a type attributed to the sculptor Skopas and dated about 340-330 BC. The best preserved version is located in the Vatican and shows the hero resting after the Caledonian boar hunt, with his dog and the head of the boar as a trophy at his side. Partially reassembled. From a London private collection. Previously in the Collection of the Swedish architect Albert Tornquist (1819-1898). Roman, 1st century AD.
