Wilhelm Mundts skulpturales Werk distanziert sich von den klassischen Begriffen der Bildhauerei. Wie Meteoriten oder Findlinge sind seine Trashstones im Ausstellungsraum verteilt, so als wären sie geradewegs vom Himmel gefallen, oder schon immer da gewesen, von den äußeren Bedingungen der Natur geschliffen, gespült und glatt poliert. Der Künstler überhöht seine Objekte nicht, indem er sie auf einem Sockel präsentiert, sondern integriert sie in das räumliche Gefüge, in direkter Interaktion mit Umgebung und Ausstellungsbesucher. Trashstones ist eine umfangreiche, noch immer anhaltende Werkserie, die der Künstler 1989 begonnen hatte. Jedes Stück trägt eine Seriennummer. Kunststoffabfälle und Produktionsrückstände bilden den Kern der Skulptur, den Mundt mit Klebebändern umwickelt, danach mit Knetgummi verspachtelt und schließlich mit Glasfaser verstärkten Kunststoff ummantelt. Im Anschluss wird die Oberfläche individuell geschliffen, wodurch untere Schichten in Erscheinung treten, die der skulpturalen Haut eine sinnlich mehrfarbige Textur verleihen. Hier verlässt der Künstler die plastische Dimension und setzt sich mit medialen Fragen der Malerei auseinander.

Wilhelm Mundt's sculpture maintains a distance from the classical concept of the sculptural art. His Trashstones are dispersed around the exhibition room like meteorites or objets trouvés as if they had just fallen from the skies, or had always been there, honed, shaped, rinsed and polished smooth by the external forces of nature. The artist doesn't elevate his works by placing them on a plinth, but integrates them in the spatial structure, in direct interaction with the surroundings and the exhibition visitor. Trashstones is an expansive, still ongoing work series, initiated by the artist in 1989. Each piece bears a serial number. Plastic waste and production residues form the core of the sculpture, which Mundt bounds around with adhesive tape, adds plasticine with a spattle, and finally coats with glass-fibre reinforced plastic. After this the surface is individually ground, polished and finished, which causes substrates to appear, lending the sculptural skin a sensuous and multicoloured texture. This is where the artist abandons the three-dimensional and stages a confrontation with the media of painting.
