Modern Renaissance: Full Line Up Unveiled for Auction on 25 March

Sotheby's

Silver Plates Crafted by Picasso and Atelier Hugo
Picasso’s oeuvre is defined by technical inventiveness and joy in experimentation, perfectly encapsulated by this complete set of twenty-four silver plates inspired by the opulent gold and silver dishes of sixteenth and seventeenth century Italy and France. Each of the twenty-four plates carry an individual motif related to the mythological subjects that Picasso was painting at the time, with the nymphs, satyrs, centaurs and fauns of his paintings making an appearance. Among these, is a striking profile of Picasso’s last love and muse, Jacqueline Roque.

A Monumental Minotaur by Bahman Mohasses
Often referred to as the ‘Picasso of Iran’, Iranian modernist Bahman Mohasses’ works collected by the likes of European ambassadors, Nelson Rockefeller and the Empress Farah Diba. Following the Islamic Revolution much of Mohasses’ public art was destroyed, and the artist moved to Italy, retreating from the world and living in self-imposed seclusion. In his later years, Mohasses systematically sought to destroy much of his own work and so surviving pieces of this impressive scale – measuring over two metres – are hugely important.

Painted in 1977, Minotaur sulla riva del mare epitomises the artist’s powerfully expressive style and his fascination with this mystical creature. Having never been on the market – or exhibited publicly since its creation – the work is now being offered jointly by the artist’s family in the US and the Bruni family in Italy. Francesco Bruni, the grandfather of one of the consignors, was close friends with Mohasses when he lived in Rome, and the work has since been preserved by the Bruni family across three generations.
