INTERNATIONAL FINE ART FAIR, New York

INTERNATIONAL

Highlights in this group were: a Milton Avery oil of figures on the beach at Coney Island from 1935, priced at around $750,000, and a Hans Hoffmann of Balloons on sale at around $300,000, sold at Hollis Taggart Galleries, a light bright oil of Niagara Falls by Hudson River School artist Jasper Francis Cropsey with an asking price of $220,000 at Babcock Galleries, sold to a New York private buyer; an early Arthur B. Davies (he was instrumental in the founding of The Armory Show in New York) oil from 1896, Orchard Idlyll, which sold at around $140,000 (Tom Veilleux Gallery) and Romares Bearden's watercolour of a bullfight from 1947 for a five figure sum (Abby M. Taylor Fine Art). Among the American moderns, there were several sales in the $40,000-$50,000 range at new exhibitor Linda Hyman Fine Arts. One was Mark Tobey's Fond Bleu ,a small tempera on paper abstract from 1966 and another Blue Dancer , a larger 1962 composition in beads, shells, wood, metal rings and various other materials on panel by Alfonso Ossorio. Ossorio was an American Abstract Expressionist, but, unlike close friends such as Jackson Pollock, he has fallen into comparative obscurity. He had a house in the Hamptons, finding materials for pictures such as this on the beach close by.

Another new exhibitor, The Fine Art Society from London, reported a very satisfactory early sale from among their selection of 19th and 20th century British pictures, when John Minton's large portrait of Italian prisoner of war, poet, and frequent Minton sitter, Eric Verrico found a buyer. Painted in the late 1940s, it was on offer with a $175,000 price tag. In addition, Waterhouse & Dodd (London), dealers in Impressionist and Modern, were delighted with their first time as exhibitors, making several six figure sales. Mallett (New York and London), returning to the fair after an absence of a few years, sold a group of 24 botanical watercolours by 19th century artist Emily Stackhouse to an American collector in the early days of the fair.

Among the Old Masters dealers, Jack Kilgore & Co. (New York) made a number of substantial sales, including a small oval-shaped oil on copper by Jan Linsen of an Italianate landscape; Moretti (Florence, New York and London) whose specialty are rare and exquisite early Italian Renaissance gold ground panel paintings, sold a small panel by the Master of Bardolino of St Columbanus for a "high" six figure price to a private buyer, with interest reported in a number of other works. New exhibitor Lawrence Steigrad Fine Arts (New York) was delighted with his first appearance at the fair, offering a range mostly of Dutch Old Masters, but also including a small group of American paintings and drawings. Across the board interest included several sales to new clients from as far away as California.
