TEFAF Maastricht

TEFAF

Jayavarman as Buddharaja Cambodia, Bayon, circa 1200 AD Jayavarman VII (r. 1181–1220) was one of the greatest and most productive kings of the Khmer Empire. He married Jayarajadevi and after her death, wed her sister Indradevi. The two women are commonly thought to have been a great inspiration to him, particularly in his devotion to Buddhism. He expanded the empire to its largest territorial extent and engaged in a building programm that produced numerous temples, highways, rest houses, and hospitals. This has contributed to a legend of the Buddharaja, the King-Buddha, who regarded compassion as the mainstay of kingship.

A Chinese European subject eggshell saucer dish 20.2 cm Qianlong, circa 1735-1760 This rare saucer dish is painted in the centre with portraits of Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia (1740-1780) and her consort, Francis of Lorraine, the rim with a border of gilt flowering branches and fruiting grapevines. The royal couple is finely depicted with rich enamelling of their garments, each beneath a gilt coronet and enclosed by a gilt vine border. Traditionally thought to have been made for the wedding of Maria Theresa and Francis of Lorraine. The Chinese artist was certainly supplied with a print or commemorative medallion of the couple to copy. A 1759 portrait of Maria Theresa by Martinus Mytens II in the Academy of fine arts, Vienna, shows the Queen with similar facial features. A 1756 bronze medal by Mattaus Donner depicts the couple in profile and also confirms their physical characteristics at this point in time.
