Five works on offer from the Collection of David Teiger included a record-setting work by Dana Schutz, whose Civil Planning achieved an outstanding $2.4 million after a heated bidding battle between at least seven collectors – 6 times the work’s $400,000 high estimate. Proceeds from Sotheby’s sales of the collection will benefit Teiger Foundation – soon to be one of the world’s largest and most significant contemporary art foundations.
ARTISTS FOR THE HAMMER MUSEUM
Tonight’s auction featured works donated by artists Mark Bradford, Rashid Johnson, Charles Gaines, and Mark Grotjahn in support of Artists for the Hammer Museum. Throughout the spring, celebrated artists with strong ties to the Hammer Museum at UCLA donated works to support the creation of a new Artist Fund, which will directly support the museum’s pioneering exhibition program and work with emerging artists.
A highlight of the group was Bradford’s Scratch Pink from 2018, which achieved $3 million (estimate $2/3 million). Renowned for his richly textured canvases built up of layers of collaged paper, Bradford’s expressive abstraction embodies the urban experience as-lived. Invoking visions of cartographic grids or aerial topography, Scratch Pink is an exceptionally vibrant example of the artist’s mixed media paintings.
Thirty-six additional works from Artists for the Hammer Museum will be offered in tomorrow’s Contemporary Art Day Auction, beginning at 10am EST.
