Thomas Bompard Appointed Chairman of Sotheby's West Coast

LOS ANGELES, 13 April 2017 – Sotheby’s (NYSE: BID) is pleased to announce that Thomas Bompard, one of the Company’s leading specialists in Impressionist & Modern Art, will relocate from London to Los Angeles where he will begin a new role as Chairman of Sotheby’s West Coast, and Senior Specialist in the Fine Art Division. Mr. Bompard joins an impressive team in Los Angeles and San Francisco and expands the range of expertise and services available to Sotheby’s clients in the region.

“The West Coast is firmly established as an international art destination – home to many of today’s leading artists and collectors, as well some of the world’s great museums,” said Valentino Carlotti, Sotheby’s Global Head of Business Development, continuing, “so we are excited to appoint a key specialist and talent, like Thomas, to the position of Chairman to lead our operation in this critical region.”

“With each visit to California over the past several years, I found the energy and creativity of the art scene more and more impressive, and the passion and commitment of the collectors completely inspiring,” commented Mr. Bompard. “There is so much opportunity for Sotheby’s up and down the West Coast and I couldn’t imagine a more exciting move for me personally. California is today, more than ever, the promise land of entrepreneurs with a unique life style – a natural paradise for art lovers and collectors.”

Mr. Bompard will assume his new role effective immediately, with a dual title – Chairman of Sotheby’s West Coast, and Senior Specialist in the Fine Art Division – and relocate to Los Angeles later this year.

“The collecting community in Los Angeles has reached a level of power and sophistication that demands senior expertise on the ground to work with clients every day,” said Amy Cappellazzo, Chairman of Sotheby’s Fine Art Division. “Having worked in the international centers of Paris and London, Thomas will bring tremendous experience and energy to a team that now reflects the range of services Sotheby’s has in its principal locations around the world.”

SPRING AUCTION HIGHLIGHTS ON VIEW AT SOTHEBY’S LOS ANGELES
17 & 18 April 2018

Next week, our Los Angeles galleries will host an exciting exhibition of works from Sotheby’s upcoming flagship sales of Impressionist & Modern Art, Contemporary Art, 20thCentury Design and more.

Among the highlights are selected works from the collection of pioneering entrepreneur and philanthropist Morton Mandel, and his wife Barbara, including one of the great masterpieces of Joan Miró’s late career, Femme, oiseau (est. $10/15 million), Mark Rothko’s brilliant red and orange work on paper from 1969 (est. $7/10 million), and  Roy Lichtenstein’s Girl with Still Life in Landscape from 1976 (est. $7/10 million). The full proceeds of the sale of 26 works from the Mandel’s collection, which is expected to raise $75 million, will benefit the Mandel Foundation and the causes they have championed throughout their lives.

Other works on view next week in Los Angeles will include: Jackson Pollock’s Number 32, 1949, a rare example of the artist’s iconic drip paintings that has been held in the same private collection for over 35 years (est. $30/40 million); Le Repos, a stunning 1932 portrait of Pablo Picasso’s ‘golden muse’, Marie-Thérèse Walter (est. $25/35 million); and Claude Monet’s serene Matinée sur la Seine from 1896 (est. $18/25 million).

This May, Sotheby’s is honored to be offering important works that have been donated by prominent artists with close ties to the mission and history of The Studio Museum in Harlem. The sales will support the campaign to construct the museum’s new home, designed by Adjaye Associates in collaboration with Cooper Robertson. While the full offering will be unveiled in New York in early May, works donated by Lynette Yiadom-Boakye Kori Newkirk and Sam Gilliam will be on view in Los Angeles.
